The film begins with the early life of William Wallace (Mel Gibson), who witnesses the brutal murder of his father and older brother by English soldiers. Wallace is raised by his uncle and eventually returns to his home as an adult. The film depicts Wallace as a man of humble origins who becomes a passionate and determined leader fighting for Scottish independence.
Wallace falls in love with his childhood sweetheart, Murron (Catherine McCormack). Their happiness is short-lived when Murron is executed by English soldiers after a failed attempt to protect her from their advances. This event becomes the catalyst for Wallaceโs rebellion against the English King Edward I (Patrick McGoohan) and his son, Prince Edward (Peter Hanly).
Wallace gathers a band of followers and leads a series of successful raids against the English forces. His leadership and military strategies inspire many Scots to join the fight for their freedom. Throughout his campaign, Wallace faces numerous challenges, including betrayal and political maneuvering from other Scottish leaders who are initially hesitant to support him.
