The film centers on Nanisca (Viola Davis), the general of the Agojie, a fiercely skilled group of female warriors tasked with protecting the kingdom of Dahomey. As the kingdom faces increasing external threats from neighboring states and European colonizers, Nanisca and her unit are at the forefront of the battle.

The narrative also follows Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), a young woman who, after being forced into the Agojie, undergoes intense training to become a warrior. Her journey reflects both the personal and collective struggles of the women who fight to defend their homeland.
